I don't THINK I used any orange in the making of my entry, so I'm safe from the orange hating judge

Mine has orange. But in the context, burnt orange makes sense. And I'm a play-along. Any orange-hating judgests will give me a frowny face, that's all!
Still trying to make Plan A work. I like it for my hood with some tweaks. Off to get a particular bench that would work better, as well as a few other stand-bys.
But the lot is STILL over budget and still not quite what I'm looking for here. I want a place with a bit of a 70s feel. This place is dated, but the locals like it.
However, it's another flat roof, it may be too reminiscent of lots I've done before, I had trouble finding enough 70s-esque touches and did I mention it's WAY over budget? I haven't even done the outside yet, and it's 8K over! Also, it looks too fresh. I need to dirty it up just a little! And also ... boxy. Really boxy. Roller and ice rinks do tend to be boxy, however.
I've been working on this since I first saw the new round's budget and size, so this I started this before the roller rink was suggested here. I was contemplating an ice rink at first. Yes, they do have a few real-life ones out there. I was surprised, too. But desert dwellers might like to ice skate, too!
Quick peek to show you I have been working on something. Needs a WHOLE ton of work yet. And at this point, I am probably going to give Plan B a try as well, because it seems I can't keep A in line (no pun intended). Haven't even started on B!
The car statues are 0 Simoleons. Can't cut there, unfortunately.
(Thuds head on desk. Again.) Ah, well. Make the terrain lush, do a tweak or two, and it might look OK on my college campus. My college Sims have no place to roller boogie.

Actually, turns out I was too good to my Simmies. They're paying more attention to the food machines. arcade and ... err ... juice bar than the rink. Also, I could cut down on the lights over the rink.
So I removed one vending machine, two arcade machines, and three rink lights, and I'm now 2000 over. I'm replacing the sofas with flat, backless benches that if I recall, were a little cheaper. I still will need to cut more to do some plant-plopping, though. And pay more attention to the rink, you darn Sims. You are supposed to SKATE, darn it! Routing works fine, at any rate.
The exterior looks too 80s. Avocado, burnt orange, gold and wood tones, of course, with a little off-white! I'm not sure desert structures had aluminum siding (frowns). Might need some research. But with all those recolors out there, I can surely find avocado stucco, plaster, paneling or something like that. Maxis has a good gold plaster, actually. (Palette to refresh my memory: https://retrorenovation.com/2010/04...ifornia-paints/)
And on to Plan B from there, and I'll see which one I like better. Problem is, I've been dreading Plan B (hint there). Do I really want to tear what little hair there is left on my head out?

Why shouldn't you get aluminum siding in the desert? People don't go around touching siding all the time and the kinds of buildings that have it are also insulated. Most sheds - including the large ones at the rodeo grounds - are metal, also; and metal roofing beats shingle any day of the week.
However, stucco/adobe/concrete are far more common in buildings like rinks.
And when did we get the Round 2 size and budget? I can't find them.
Ugly is in the heart of the beholder.
(My simblr isSim Media Res . Widespot,Widespot RFD: The Subhood, and Land Grant University are all available here. In case you care.)

Scores for Round 1
Scores out of a possible 90. One judge's sheet lost her comments, because it saved wrong, so I only have her scores 83
Build | Decor | Playability | Theme | Budget | Uniqueness | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Judge 1 | 5 | 3.5 | 3.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 4 |
Judge 2 | 4.5 | 2+3 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
Judge 3 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
Charmful: Peaceful is what comes to mind when looking at your lot. The decorating is tasteful and calm and outside is very pretty but restful. If I were a sim I would gravitate to the inside/outside tea areas. Lovely.
Charmful: Good landscaping. Very theme-appropriate decorative elements. Nice interior decorating. The tea-rooms are especially neat. Some narrow areas that will cause stomping. The upper floor of the restaurant looks a little disjointed as the decorative elements don't extend to that floor. Screenshots do not quite meet requirements.

Maxon: I adore this, an absolute slice of tropical paradise, sign me up!
Maxon: Pretty pictures, very scenic. However not enough showing the actual build elements making it harder to judge certain aspects. Great theme ambiance, very caribbean. Great choice in foliage, build elements and furniture styles. Some narrow areas that could have been avoided.

justJones: Gorgeous decorating, many great details like the wall mural on the front and the beam-work by the bar. Clever use of space. Skillful blend of colors in build elements and furniture. A bit monotone with the walls and roof blending in to each other and the ground. Perhaps a tad sparse landscaping.
JustJones: I'll just grab my sombrero and come along for dinner. I love the sign and the vibrant colors. I do think the back is very bare though.

Justpetro: I like the lines of the roof, makes a nice statement out the front. That plus the large inside garden makes it very inviting. Not too sure on the white tile with the Asian style window in the kitchen and I think a pond someplace would have been nice as well. While I can see your floor plan a bit more zoomed in without the outside garden would be helpful.
JustPetro: Really pleasing landscaping, great terrain paint work and nice to see the back of the lot decorated as well. Very pretty interior, creative details that give it a very asian feel. Unnecessary bottle neck by the bar, but otherwise good playability.

SparkySays: Theme-appropriate decorating. Nice detail with statues on the roof. The landscaping is a bit too basic. Interior color scheme meshes well together. Good choice of furniture. Very nice patio.
Sparkysays: I like the decorating colors and the wall treatment in the dining room with the panels and shelves. It looks like you have good flow through and routing here. There is some confusion of styles going on, mostly with the Second Empire doors and windows clashing with the Asian theme but a few of the decorating pieces do as well. There is a round Asian window in the in-game collection of Far East items which you could have used. Those collections can be quite helpful when you are unfamiliar with a style. The grounds are rather bare; think about adding more plants, a terrain walking path, a pond and/or a shrine. With the fountain set into tile, since it's natural with stone edging, setting it into something more natural like pebbles would look better. Good to see terrain paint used around the plants and rocks, that helps make it looks more natural. Are there no other windows around the building? Think about adding one or two per side to open it up a little. With your floor plan can you please put your walls up and zoom in on the building. Walls up help us see wall deco, coverings and windows.

Kanzen: Very unique, never really seen anything like it. Very colorful and bright. Nice blend of colors. Creative use of CC. Good landscaping. A bit busy, but given the lot type that makes sense. Some narrow areas.
Kanzen: I love this, I feel like I have gone for a day at the sea side markets. The only small quibble I have is that it looks like you used decking as foundation, but decking isn't meant to support the main structure of a building since it isn't strong enough. Apart from that I love every bit especially all the bright colors.

OnayaW: A warm and friendly restaurant, I like the seating arrangement inside and the playground makes this a great place to take the kids. Some decor like pictures on the wall, kitchen clutter or tablecloths would have improved the inside decorating score. The garden is pretty, but the black water spoils the back. My suggestion would be to place a square of pool tile at the front where it can't be seen, snap the picture then remove it. While nothing outside of the lot is being judged everything inside the lot is. The potted pine trees don't really go with the desert theme, maybe some potted flowers there instead. I like the front shaping, just remember to lower your roof pitch a little with the M&G roofing tool.
OnayaW: Very pretty backyard, great use of foliage. A bit sparse landscaping in the front. Very harmonious interior, but a bit sparse on the decorating. Nice with a playground. Some narrow areas that will cause stomping.

Karen Lorraine: Very British countryside pub, just as intended. Great use of wallpapers on the exterior, and excellent roof. Good landscaping. Good choices on interior decorating, but a bit sparse. Many narrow areas that will cause stomping.
Karen Lorraine: The garden is gorgeous and inside is very pretty, love the ceilings. I'm sure this would look very much at home nestled into Shrewsbury some place. One small thing is I feel the inside decorating is a little busy, in one shot there are four different patterns going on. Outside the columns not meeting the pergola is a little distracting but I ignored those since that is how maxis made them.

CatherineTCJD: Clear amber. I sure hope it's Jimmie's Rot Gut Cider and nothing else. Then again that sounds like something I don't want from the juice bar. The front shot makes it look like a cute little log cabin, then boom you see the rest. It's very interesting with the stairways and bathrooms. Not too sure about the electronic equipment and furniture choice out on the back desk, it rains a lot in the mountains. Hope David sells plenty of lobster as he will be replacing those constantly. Can sims use the upstairs sitting area near the bar?
CatherineTCJD: Gorgeous back view. The window colors and placement, the choice of wall decorations, the decks and the choice of furniture are really captivating. Landscaping is very well done, basic but in an elegant thought-through way. Great choices of colors on the interior, everything syncs up very well. However, poker tables are not usable at an angle, and many narrow passages that will affect playability

Freelala: Very interesting lot. Really creative use of objects to give that street food feel. Love how each of the carts are very different, but still all look like food carts. The red chairs and the straw umbrellas really work with the color schemes of the lot. It all matches up nicely. However, pictures are very small and do not do the lot justice. Please try to take bigger pictures for the next round. Additionally there's no podium which means although this lot looks fantastic it won't actually function as a restaurant.
Freelala: I love the food cart gathering, they are all really cute. I like the idea and your execution of the various styles. In fact, I might build one in my own desert hood after seeing this. Now to the bad stuff, unfortunately you have chef stoves but no podium, so this won't work as a restaurant. If this lot was intended to be self-serve you needed to have said so clearly in the title or just below it, although I think self-serve would take away some of the charm. An invisible podium behind a food cart could have been used to keep the look. (Then there would just be a strange person talking on an invisible phone )
The bathroom has a lot of wasted space. A shower, toilet stall or a baby change station could have gone in the left area and the right side is rather large for one urinal. I am not sure if the urinal can be used on an angle in a corner like that, did you test? If the urinal can be used let me know and I will restore  half a playable point. Not that I want to see a male sim standing to pee there lol I will take your word on it. Do all the other angled items in the food carts work on an angle?
I really need photos that meet the rule requirements. No smaller than 800 by 600. Fraps to take screenshots and FastStone to change them is easy to use and free. If you need help with this please feel free to ask.

Yvelotic2001: I like the inside ambience with the plants and wooden columns and the glass roof adds interest. I do think there are too many windows and the landscaping while nice could have done with a little bit more. Some more plants, perhaps some bright flowers and terrain paint for that lush tropical feel.
That's a shame about the water mod, I would suggest taking the mod out when you want pond pictures or make another sims 2 folder for the contest.
Yvelotic2001: Your screenshots do not do your lot justice. There are sections of the lot that can only be seen in floor plan view. We can only judge what you show us, so please try and show all parts of your lots in the next round. The concept is interesting, the colors all work well together. The blue bathrooms are a nice touch, ties in with the pools in a neat way.

Sparklypotato: Very pretty landscaping, love the painted lake bottom. Very creative and smart use of terrain tools, creating the peek of building through the canopy of trees. Great job adhering to screenshot guidelines (removing trees for front view picture etc). Good roof. However the tables downstairs will be seen as part of the restaurant, making host and waiters track down to bring food and show guests their tables. With the narrow top landing that is going to cause stomping, and potentially problems getting Sims to sit down and eat.
SparklyPotato: I like how your building perches above the road and has an interesting shape. You hit the rustic mountain feel but it's a bit bland. Some more clutter or other decoration like mountain paintings, plants, even some maxis spice jars on the kitchen counters would have improved the inside. Another way to add interest would have been to use another flooring or scatter rugs. I'm also not too keen on those basic chairs with those rustic interesting tables. The tables make a statement and the chairs are just there, I think some more natural chairs would have gone better.
Outside I like your pond and you have used terrain paint on the path which is good but there is no terrain paint under the trees except for grass. With that many pine trees there would be lots of pine needles. There is one in the maxis terrain section, so no cc needed.
Everything looks playable except I am looking at the male bathroom and see no toilet stall! I know it has two urinals, but what if they need to do more? I'm nervous for them. Let's hope the Bear Runs don't hit or they may be forced to use a tree.

Kerri191: I love all of the garden, the eat in/out style and the cute little entryway. It's a very private oasis, good for a romantic dinner. I do think there are too many fence lights and a private bathroom really doesn't need a urinal. I think the kitchen could have done with a little bit of clutter, or if it's there I can't see it. Outside the bathrooms you could have placed a sofa since the hallway is quite bare or appears that way on the overhead. With the floor plan you don't need to show the desk again since it's already shown twice before. Move the camera to get a larger closer shot of the inside building since I would hate to miss things.
kerri191: The entrance is a neat detail. Excellent landscaping, great use of vegetation. Good choice of roof. Great layout, smart choices for playability. Sparse decorating on the interior, but in a thought-through simplistic way. Good harmonious color choices. Good screenshots.

Comments for playalongs? (Shudders). Considering I had half the time to do the lot and chaos was ensuing (as it is wont to do when I enter contests, which is why I'm at least trying to get something ready this time, just in case), egads. I was lucky to get something out!
When I used the last lot in my hood, though, I did change over one or two things I wasn't happy with once I had a good look in a calmer mindset. I am curious to see if the judges agreed.
OK. Managed to squeeze the budget on the current lot to stick in at least a little fauna. It won't look lush, but it shouldn't look too forsaken. I need to do some video game research and still find an appropriately avocado poured wall. It's gotta be JUST the right shade of 70s avocado! It's out there waiting for me somewhere ...
Found that. I think. Also considering roofing and looking at RL commercial buildings in US desert areas.
Also, I found this for inspiration. Yes, it's SimCity, but perhaps this might spark an idea. Some of these things, I don't think you can use, and some, I'm not quite sure WHY you would want them, but this IS coming from a niche builder.

Looking at that, I think I might switch my Plan B. I really wanted that for one of the last two rounds. Museums can have coffee bars ....

I'm pleased with my score, hopefully I can pull off next round's entry better
I'm aware of the possible routing issues, it probably could have been laid out a bit better.

I take all my screenshots with windows 10 - press alt + Printscreen, paste it into paint and save it - if it can help anyone. I find it easier than to struggle with screenshot programs which don't always work with Windows 10 (or at least not properly). While it may not work as well for storytelling, it does work very well for lot pics.

Thank you Justpetro..
I have Windows 7..and I have used the printscreen..hate it lol..
My pictures for this entry was used with in game picture taking and then resized in Photoshop..
I have never been good at picture taking..and have done everything everyone has said to do with tutorials but still they are not as good as they should be..
EDIT:
Ok I uninstalled Fraps..did a search to make sure there wasn't anything on my computer and then reinstalled it..but I don't think it's working..going into the game to make sure..

I also had to practice a lot It get easier with time. If you use the in game camera and take screenshots, the quality will be a lot better than the in game shots. It is better to make pics smaller when needed than to make them larger, quality wise. One gets used to PrintScreen in time and, for me, it also means less programs on my system. I did use Fraps and Gadwin for a while when I still had Windows 7, but personally, the print screen for me is less trouble.

Thank you Justpetro..for the help and tips..
I am glad you didn't have any foot stomping Karen lol..
I did even though I had 2 stairs I still had that stupid foot stomping and hand waving..omgosh..Sims are idiots I swear it was the brain fart..the person to take you to your seat..going first then the sim was supposed to follow..well of course that hand waving and stomping around..until he realized he can use the other stairs.. I always put 2 stairs in my builds just for that reason..but when I am playing I get them to learn the Ninja teleport..this way they don't have to use the stairs..for the most part lol..
Ok went into the game..took pictures with Fraps and nothing I give up..

Regarding the stairs, which ones are you using? If you use the connecting stairs they allow more than one sim to use them at a time. The 'staircases' ones don't (that also includes the spiral ones).

I have windows 7 but not sure what OS means..
With Fraps you can go to view screenshots and they will be there..but I have nothing..no pictures, no timer at the top left hand corner of the game when Fraps is running..
For the stairs it is all of them that the sims do it with..when there are 2 people going up..or trying to lol..in game and cc stairs..
I think I need to move this to a topic..so I don't get in trouble posting all this in the contest entry field..sorry everyone..
Thank you Karen for your help..

OS stands for Operating System and yours is 7, so Fraps should work.

I have placed my lot, and have decided on the mountain theme. Now comes the difficult part. I have an idea in my head for the structure, but I've never done anything like it, and I think I'm procrastinating out of nervousness. I like function to dictate form, and that is not what is happening in my head.
