Default CAW World picture
You make a 256x256 pixel PNG picture for your world.
If I do it from a jpg, and covert it to a png using Microsoft Paint after cropping it and reducing it in size, CAW complains it isn't a 24 bit PNG file.

If I do it from a screen cap either <PrtScr> from full screen mode or <Alt>-<PrtScr> from windowed mode, then CAW will accept the PNG file.

What's up with that? And I think I just answered my own question about a work around for it...

In photoshop I can choose how many bits in each channel, perhaps you just make the wrong file type. I have to make sure it's an 8 bit x 3 channels RGB.

I use Paint.NET to crop and/or re-size the image as necessary, then save it as a 24 bit png. It's a free program which is simple to use. It can be downloaded here: https://www.getpaint.net/.

What I found works is to make the PNG picture in Paint, resize to 256x256 then save it as a PNG.
Open it in GIMP and Image->flatten. Then export as a PNG and CAW is happy
